Agent dropoff

Agent dropoff is the point where an AI agent abandons a purchase or task because a website element built for humans blocks it.

The loss became measurable in 2026. Bots now generate 57.5 percent of global HTML traffic, the first machine majority in the history of the web (Cloudflare Radar, June 2026). Traffic from AI agents and agentic browsers grew 7,851 percent in 2025 (HUMAN Security, March 2026). When an agent fails at a CAPTCHA, a forced login or an empty HTML shell, the order moves to the next shop. That failure point is agent dropoff.

01 Metric

The Agent Dropoff Rate (ADR)

ADR = 1 − (completed agent transactions ÷ agent sessions with purchase intent)

Purchase intent means an identified agent requests product, cart or checkout pages. Completed means the session reaches an order confirmation or form goal. An ADR of 0.95 means 95 out of 100 buying-intent agent sessions end before completion.

02 Blockers

The six typical blockers

  • CAPTCHAThe agent cannot solve the puzzle and leaves. The purchase intent was real.
  • Forced account creationRegistration walls before checkout end the task. Agents do not create accounts.
  • JS-dependent renderingPrice and buy button only exist after client-side rendering. The raw HTML stays empty for the agent.
  • Unstable selectorsGenerated class names change with every deploy. Learned elements disappear.
  • Session lossOne step back empties the cart or kills the session.
  • Late shipping costsThe total changes at the last step. The agent aborts because the offer no longer matches its task.
03 Context

The turning point: March 2026

OpenAI launched Instant Checkout in September 2025 and ended it in March 2026. Purchases now complete on the merchant’s own site (Modern Retail, March 2026). Walmart reported that in-chat purchases converted three times worse than purchases on its own website (Search Engine Land, March 2026). The merchant checkout is once again where the sale happens. Whether agents get through it decides revenue that no analytics report shows.
